Men's top seeds Nikita Burmakin of Russia and Italian Tommaso Giovannini booked their place in the semi-finals of the International Tennis Federation Beach Tennis World Championships in Terracina, Italy with a 7-6, 6-4 victory against home pairing Simone Burini and Luca Cramarossa.

Cramarossa had been partnered with 2018 champion Antomi Ramos Viera of Spain in Terracina but a late change of plan saw him pair up with Burini in the qualifying draw.

“We are seeded number one so probably we have a lot of pressure, but we are doing our job,” said Giovannini,

“We didn’t lose any sets until the semi-finals, so we are happy.

"This is the first time that we are really a team.

"We are always positive, always smiling, so I’m very happy for that.”

Italians Alessandro Calbucci and Michele Cappelletti have reached the final four without dropping a set after despatching eighth seeds Marcus Ferreira and Thales Oliveira Santos 6-1, 6-1.

In the women's event, German Maraike Biglmaier and her Brazilian partner Rafaella Miller looked set for a quick victory against Brazilian duo Joana Cortez and Marcela Vita when they led by a set and a break.

Their fifth-seeded rivals fought back and led the deciding set 2-0 before the third seeds responded to take a 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 victory.

Biglmaier and Miller will face second-seeded Italians Flaminia Daina and Nicole Nobile in the semi-finals after they defeated compatriots Martina Corbara and Ninny Valentini 6-3, 6-3 in the quarter-finals.

Italian top seeds Giulia Gasparri and Sofia Cimatti downed Brazilians Samantha Barijan and Patricia Diaz 7-5, 6-1.

In the last four they will face Italian fourth seeds Eva D'Elia and Veronica Visani.
