Belgium's Gérard beat Austria's Nico Langmann 6-0, 6-1, while Great Britain's Reid - the beaten finalist in the French Open final on Saturday (June 8) - thrashed France's Laurent Giammartini 6-0, 6-0 in this International Tennis Federation Super Series event. 

Other seeded players to complete their match on a day when rainfall led to an early end to the action included second-ranked Gustavo Fernández of Argentina.

The French Open champion defeated France's Lahcen Majdi 6-0, 6-0 at Parc Départemental des Sports de la Grenouillère d'Antony.

There were also victories for fifth seed Stefan Olsson of Sweden and eighth seed Maikel Scheffers of The Netherlands.

Olsson overcame Argentina's Ezequiel Casco 6-2, 6-1, while Scheffers prevailed 6-0, 6-0 at the expense of Italy's Luca Spano.

Among the winners in the first round of the women's singles event was Japan's Saki Takamuro, who beat compatriot Manami Tanaka 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to set up a clash with top seed Diede de Groot of The Netherlands.

Second seed Yui Kamiji of Japan also learned who her second-round opponent will be after the United States' Dana Mathewson defeated Argentina's Maria Florencia Moreno 6-4, 6-4.

All eight seeded players have received byes through to the second round and were not scheduled to take to the court today.

In the quads event, the US's Greg Hasterok overcame France's Jérôme De Meyere 6-1, 6-4 to earn a second-round meeting with second seed Koji Sugeno of Japan.

Top seed David Wagner of the US will face either Chile's Pablo Araya or Japan's Yoichi Otsubo, both of whom are qualifiers, in his first outing.
