Pakistan earned a shock 14-run victory over England as the host nation fell short in their pursuit of a record run chase at the Cricket World Cup.

Having been put into bat by England captain Eoin Morgan, Pakistan posted a testing score of 349-8 from their 50 overs at Trent Bridge in Nottingham.

England, the tournament favourites and number one one-day international side in the world, have chased bigger totals and looked on course to do so again with Jos Buttler at the crease.

After Buttler departed the ball after reaching three figures, the momentum swung back in favour of Pakistan, whose death bowling restricted England's scoring.

Despite Buttler's 103 and 107 from Joe Root - the first century of the competition - England ended their innings on 334-9.

Victory for Pakistan, beaten 4-0 by England in an one day international (ODI) series earlier this year, sparked their World Cup campaign into life after they were crushed by the West Indies in their opening match.

"It was a great team effort - the bowlers bowled really well today," said Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed.

"We tried a couple of different things - we started with Shadab because we know their openers are not good against spin.

"Fielding is a very important part.

"In the last ODI series it was different.

"Today we fielded better and we bowled better."

Pakistan may have raised an eyebrow when Morgan won the toss and elected to field and it was a decision the England captain was made to rue.

Openers Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq set the tone for Pakistan, while Babar Azam made a well-constructed 63.

Mohammad Hafeez top-scored for Pakistan with 87 but was dropped by Jason Roy for 14.

Chasing 350 to win, England lost Roy early before Jonny Bairstow fell shortly after to the bowling of Wahab Riaz, who finished with figures of 3-82.

Root's arrival at the crease rejuvenated England's innings before he holed out for 107.

Morgan and Stokes failed to steady the ship but Buttler demonstrated his trademark hitting to give England hope of a record World Cup run chase.

His dismissal in almost identical fashion to Root's was the final nail in the coffin for England as Pakistan tightened the screw to close out a famous and memorable win.
