The fourth and fifth seeds were knocked out of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Beach World Tour event in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

With the top three qualifying comfortably for round two through the pool stage, some of the other seeds found life tougher on Friday.

Sam Pedlow and Sam Schachter of Canada have been rewarded for defeating Latvian fourth seeds Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins in round one with an even tougher task.

A gruelling round-one contest saw Pedlow and Schachter edge out the Latvian pair 21-10, 14-21, 15-7 and they will face Norwegian top seeds Anders Mol and Christian Sørum tomorrow.

Fifth seeds Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan were also ousted as they lost to Martin Ermacora and Moritz Pristauz of Austria.

The Qatari pair had got off to a fine start as they took the opening set 21-16 but 39th seeds Ermacora and Pristauz stepped up their game to run out 16-21, 21-15, 15-10 winners.

Also going home from Ostrava early are seventh seeds Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen, who were outperformed by eighth-seeded Chileans Marco and Esteban Grimalt.

The cousins eased to a 21-16, 21-13 victory to set up a clash with Spanish second seeds Adrian Gavira and Pablo Herrera.

The Spanish duo are bidding to retain their Ostrava Beach Open crown.

Brazilians Vitor Gonçalves Felipe and Pedro Solberg had a testing time in round one against Austrians Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst.

Losing the first set, the 15th seeds fought back to win 18-21, 21-16, 16-14, and will meet compatriots Alison Cerutti and Álvaro Morais Filho tomorrow.

The women's action also threw up some intriguing results with second seeds Barbora Hermannová and Marketa Slukova failing to move past the pool stage after losing to Swiss pair Nina Betschart and Tanya Hüberli 13-21, 21-18, 11-15.

Unfortunately for 12th seeds Betschart and Hüberli, they bowed out of the tournament against Sarah Sponcil and Kelly Claes.

The Americans won 21-19, 21-16 and will meet compatriots Alexandra Klinemann and April Ross next.

Also going home earlier than anticipated are fifth seeds Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes from Canada after they lost to Chinese pair Chen Xue and Xinxin Wang.

A close battle saw the Chinese team edge into a 1-0 lead before Pavan and Humana-Paredes levelled at 17-21, 21-18.

But it was the lower-ranked Xue and Wang who kept their nerve in the decider for a 17-15 final-set victory.

Their reward in round two will see them come up against Brazilian pair Barbara Seixas de Freitas and Fernanda Alves.

Top seeds Heather Bansley and Brandie Wilkerson of Canada await Austrian pair Katharina Schützenhöfer and Lena Plesiutschnig in round two after the duo fought back from a set down to progress 17-21, 21-16, 15-13 against Russian partnership Ekaterina Birlova and Evgenia Ukolova.

Americans Kerri Walsh Jennings and Brooke Sweat put yesterday's defeat to third-seeded compatriots Alexandra Klinemann and April Ross behind them to record a 21-10, 21-18 victory against Latvian pair Tina Graudina and Anastasija Kravcenoka.
