Argentina and France both claimed their second wins today to advance to the round of 16 at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Poland.

The Argentinians beat Portugal 2-0 in Group F at Bielsko-Biala Stadium, while France defeated Panama by the same scoreline in Group E at Bydgoszcz Stadium.

Argentina took the lead in the 33rd minute when Julian Alvarez squared for Adolfo Gaich, whose effort clipped the post on its way in.

For the first 25 minutes of the second-half it looked as if Portugal would equalise.

The danger man was Jota, who in the 64th minute rifled a shot from the left side that Manuel Roffo did well to palm away for a corner.

Jota then won a free-kick 22 yards out which Gedson narrowly struck wide in the 73rd minute.

Argentina gained confidence and captain Patricio Pérez converted Ezequiel Barco’s 84th-minute free-kick from the left to give the South Americans the cushion they needed.

France, meanwhile, comfortably picked up all three points with goals either side of half-time.

Captain Dan Zagadou broke free to flick in a shot from close range from Michael Cuisance's corner kick in the 44th minute.

Cuisance then went from provider to goalscorer after the break.

The Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder capitalised on Panama's lackadaisical execution on a free-kick and exchanged passes with Moussa Diaby before tapping in past goalkeeper Marcos Allen in the 52nd minute.

Today's other match in Group E saw Mali come from behind to overcome Saudi Arabia 4-3 in a highly-entertaining game at Gdynia Stadium.

Saudi Arabia built a two-goal lead after just 20 minutes thanks to Feras Albrikan running loose behind the Mali defence and Hassan Altambakti converting a penalty.

They gifted a goal back before half-time, however, as goalkeeper Abdulrahman Alshammari's attempt to play the ball to a team-mate was intercepted by Sékou Koïta, who fired into an empty net.

Mali levelled the game in the 54th minute through Ibrahima Kone, but it was only nine minutes later that Saudi Arabia regained the lead through Khalid Alghannam, whose lob from 25 yards out caught goalkeeper Youssouf Koita off guard.

Not to be denied, Mali tied the match once more via a Boubacar Traore thunderbolt from the right-hand side and then came a dramatic 90th-minute winner courtesy of Mohamed Camara, who found the net from Koita's curling cross.

Mali now have four points from two games and a good chance of advancing to the knockout stages.

Also winning today in Group F were South Korea with Kim Hyun-woo's second-half header the difference in a 1-0 victory over South Africa at Tychy Stadium.

They join Portugal on three points with the last round of matches on Friday (May 31) pitting South Africa against Portugal and South Korea against Argentina.

The tournament continues tomorrow.
