GB made the breakthrough in the third quarter at Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre, a powerful drag flick from Grace Balsdon following a penalty corner flying into the roof of the net.

And Owsley made sure of victory when she charged forward and released a backhand shot past Aisling D’Hooghe.

Goalscorer Balsdon said: “We had been building up all game for a goal. 

"We deserved a break and I am so pleased I was able to make that penalty corner count. 

"Our performances have shown what we are capable of and we now need to get higher levels of consistency and punish other teams in the remaining matches.”

The result moved Great Britain up one place to sixth, while Belgium slip from third to fourth.

Great Britain men experienced a very different outcome, losing 4-0 to visitors Belgium.

Florent van Aubel opened the scoring in the first quarter and doubled the lead in the second courtesy of John-John Dohmen on the rebound.

Thomas Briels extended the advantage and a Dohmen tap-in put the polish on victory.

“I think we played really well," said Briels.

"We wanted to keep the ball and we wanted to break the momentum that Great Britain had developed against Argentina [in their 3-2 defeat]. 

"We have a world-class analysis team, so we had analysed Great Britain’s performance from yesterday and previous matches, so we were very well prepared."
