Russia won six of the nine gold medals up for grabs on the opening day of the European Sambo Championships in Spanish city Gijón, but the country suffered defeats in the three other finals.

Among Russia’s winners at Palacio de Deportes de Gijón were Mukhtar Gamzaev, Zagit Gaidarov and Hadis Ibragimov in combat sambo’s 57 kilograms, 74kg and 100kg categories, respectively.

Ibragimov beat Bulgaria’s Denislav Zlatev in his final, while Gamzaev and Gaidarov defeated Ukrainian opposition in Bohdan Babenko and Vadym Burchak.

There were also gold medal match victories for Russia in the women’s 48kg, women’s 60kg and men’s 90kg divisions.

Mariia Molchanova overcame home athlete Cristina Casas at 48kg, while Iana Shevchenko downed Belarus’ Katsiaryna Prakapenka at 60kg and David Oganisyan got the better of Romania’s Gheorghe Cristian Bodirlau at 90kg.

The three other finals all saw Russians fall to losses with Ukraine’s Nataliya Smal beating Ambartsumyan in the women’s 72kg, Armenia’s Tigran Kirakosyan defeating Evgenii Eremin in the men’s 52kg and Georgia’s Mindia Luluashvili overcoming Mikhail Vorobev in the men’s 68kg.

Action in Gijón is due to continue tomorrow with the focus being on the men’s 57kg, 74kg and 100kg, the women’s 52kg, 64kg and 80kg, and combat sambo’s 62kg, 82kg and over-100kg.
