Former world indoor champion Caroline Brown of Scotland and England's Commonwealth Games gold medallist Natalie Chestney won all three of their matches in the women's singles event at the World Bowls Atlantic Championships in Wales.

Brown and Chestney, who won Commonwealth Games gold in New Delhi in 2010, are the only two unbeaten bowlers in section two after the first day of action.

The Scot recorded 21-6, 21-10, 21-7 victories against Cindy Royet of France, Cyprus' Hazel Bagshaw and Saskia Shaft of the Netherlands, respectively.

Chestney defeated Lephai Modutlwa of Botswana 21-12, Pamela Makin of the Isle of Man 21-10 and Wales' Sara Marie Nicholls 21-20.

Israel's Ruti Gilor occupies first place in section one after she claimed three victories.

Gilor was in superb form on the opening day of the tournament at Penylan.

The Israeli bowler began with a 21-8 victory over Spain's Maggie Holmes before she defeated South Africa's Colleen Piketh 21-16.

Gilor completed her perfect start to the competition by defeating Brazil's Fernanda Spelta.

World singles silver medallist and former world champion Lucy Beere was on course to join Gilor but she suffered a surprise 21-18 loss to Pilketh in the evening session.

Beere had earlier overcome Spelta 21-5 and Broomfield 21-3.

The event continues tomorrow.
