Antoine Valois-Fortier and Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard of Canada celebrated gold on the second day of the Pan American Senior Judo Championships in Lima.

Canadian success had been assured in the men’s 81 kilogram event at Coliseum One of Videna National Sports Complex in Peru’s capital city.

It followed Valois-Fortier and Étienne Briand both progressing to the final.

London 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Valois-Fortier emerged the gold medallist, earning a waza-ari victory over his compatriot.

The result gave the 2014 World Championship bronze medallist a third continental title in four years.

Brazil’s Eduardo Santos and the United States’ Jack Hatton claimed bronze medals in the division.

Beauchemin-Pinard ended her wait for a continental title, having achieved four consecutive podiums at the Championships without claiming gold.

The Canadian, a beaten finalist for the past three years, triumphed in the women’s 63kg by overcoming Cuba’s Maylin del Toro in the final.

United States’ Hannah Martin and Ecuador’s Estefania Garcia completed the podium.

Puerto Rico’s Maria Perez secured victory in the women’s 70kg, as the 2017 World Championship silver medallist beat Brazil’s Maria Portela in the gold medal bout.

The duo were joined on the podium by Canada’s Kelita Zupancic and Venzuela’s Elvismar Rodriquez.

In the men’s 73kg competition, Cuba’s Magdiel Estrada emerged the champion.

The Toronto 2015 Pan American Games gold medallist beat Canada’s Arthur Margelidon in the final.

Margelidon’s team-mate Antoine Bouchard and Venezuela’s Sergio Mattey earned bronze medals.

Action is due to continue tomorrow.

Medals will be awarded in the men’s under-73kg and under-81kg categories, and women’s under-63kg and under-70kg divisions.

They will also be handed out in the men’s under-90kg, under-100kg and over-100kg categories, and women’s under and over 78kg events.
