Germany’s Isabell Werth – the most decorated rider in equestrian sport – has taken a step towards winning her third straight International Equestrian Federation (FEI) Dressage World Cup title, with victory in today’s opening round in Gothenburg.

Riding Weihegold FRH, Werth, who will turn 50 in July, scored 81.755 to finish ahead of Laura Graves from the United States and Denmark’s Daniel Bachmann Andersen at the Scandinavium arena.

Graves, a two-time World Cup silver medallist and the world number two behind Werth, scored 80.109 riding Verdades to finish second, while Andersen managed 78.152 on Blue Hors Zack.

If Werth does triumph tomorrow, it will give the six-time Olympic and nine-time world champion her fifth World Cup final gold.

It will also see her win another title in the same city in which she gained her first, 26 years ago in 1992.

“Gothenburg holds great memories for me,” Werth said.

“Tomorrow is a whole new game – we will have to wait and see [if I can win].”

The FEI Jumping World Cup final is also taking place in Gothenburg, with the second round going ahead tonight.

The home crowd were given something to cheer in that as Sweden’s Peder Fredricson triumphed on Catch Me Not.

The 47-year-old won a jump-off by completing the course with zero faults in 37.94sec and now sits second in the overall standings.

Riding Rokfeller de Pleville Bois Margot, Spain’s Eduardo Alvarez Aznar finished second in 37.97, which sees him first overall going into Sunday’s (April 7) title decider.

Switzerland’s Steve Guerdat, who won yesterday’s round, finished 13th today and is now third overall.
