Tel Aviv in Israel will host the European Cycling Union’s (UEC) annual Congress in 2020.

In announcing the decision, the body also revealed Odense in Denmark would stage the 2021 Congress and the Czech Republic’s capital Prague would take over for 2022.

“The UEC Congress is very important for our Confederation,” said President Rocco Cattaneo.

“This is a unique opportunity for constructive meetings resulting in the guiding policy for our activities.

“Tel Aviv, Odense and Prague are cities which have the necessary facilities to host delegates from our 50 National Federations.

“I would like to thank the Presidents of the cycling federations of Israel, Denmark and the Czech Republic as well as the Mayors of these cities for their commitment and support with the organisation of these Congresses.”

This year’s UEC Congress was held in Rome last month, at which the head of the Catholic Church Pope Francis preached against doping.

"When sport becomes an end in itself and the person an instrument at the service of other interests such as prestige and profit, then distortions appear that taint it,” he said.

"I am thinking of doping, dishonesty, disrespect for oneself and one's opponents, and corruption."

Elsewhere at the meeting, amendments to the UEC's constitution were unanimously approved, including those allowing for greater female representation in the body's governance.

As approved by the Congress, from spring 2021 at least two women must sit on the seven-strong UEC Management Board.
