Second seed Viktor Axelsen of Denmark beat home favourite H.S. Prannoy today to earn his place in the men’s singles semi-finals at the Badminton World Federation India Open in New Delhi.

Axelsen claimed a 21-10, 21-16 win at the K.D. Jadhav Indoor Hall.

He will face another Indian, Parupalli Kashyap, who defeated Chinese Taipei’s Wang Tzu Wei 21-16, 21-11 in the quarter-finals.

The other last-four encounter will see third seed Srikanth Kidambi of India go up against China’s Huang Yuxiang.

Kidambi overcame compatriot Sai Praneeth Bhamidipati 21-23, 21-11, 21-19, while Huang triumphed 21-16, 21-15 at the expense of seventh seed Khosit Phetpradab of Thailand.

In the women's singles, India's Pusarla Venkata Sindhu remains on course for home glory after beating Denmark's Mia Blichfeldt 21-19, 22-20 in the last eight.

Standing between her and a place in the final is third-seeded Chinese He Bingjiao, a 21-18, 26-24 winner over defending champion Beiwen Zhang of the United States.

Also through is fourth seed Ratchanok Intanon, who defeated fellow Thai Busanan Ongbamrungphan 21-18, 21-19.

Next up for her is seventh-seeded Chinese Han Yue after she overcame Hong Kong's Cheung Ngan Yi 22-20, 21-14.

Action in New Delhi is due to continue tomorrow with the finals scheduled for Sunday (March 31).
