Italy’s Simone Origone has won his sixth speed skiing World Championship title and his first since 2013 in Vars in France.

The world record holder, who topped the leaderboard in qualifying yesterday, sealed gold with a top speed of 228.862 kilometres per hour, more than 18 km/h faster than he managed in the first round.

France's Simon Billy was awarded silver after hitting a top speed of 227.992 km/h, while Austria’s Klaus Schrottshammer finished third on 226.843 km/h.

Meanwhile, in a repeat of the women's qualifying standings, Sweden’s Britta Backlund won gold as her compatriot Lisa Hovland-Uden took silver and Italy’s Valentina Greggio gained bronze.

Backlund, the World Cup leader, claimed victory with a speed of 221.266 km/h.

Hovland-Uden managed 220.318, while Greggio was recorded doing 218.314.
