Erik Rost took his second gold of the International Orienteering Federation (IOF) World Ski Orienteering Championships in today's middle distance event in Piteå in Sweden.

Rost was the joint winner in yesterday's sprint race, sharing the gold medal with Russia's Sergey Gorlanov, who collapsed over the finish line in the same time as Rost. 

The Swede was victorious in today's middle distance event in 52:36mins.

Second was Norway's Audun Heimdal in 52:41, while Switzerland's Gion Schnyder was third in 52:47. 

Gorlanov fell off the podium with a fourth-place finish in 52:50.

Russia's Mariya Kechkina took gold in the women's middle distance, an upgrade from her third-place finish in yesterday's sprint.

She triumphed in 44:52, ahead of home favourite Tove Alexandersson in 45:02. 

This ended Alexandersson's dominance in the competition, with the Swede having won gold in the sprint and long distance. 

Alena Trapeznikova of Russia was third in 46:44.

The competition will conclude in Piteå tomorrow with the relay event.
