Russia were the dominant force on the opening day of the World Taekwondo Europe Multi European Games in Sofia, winning 12 of 16 gold medals on offer in the under-21 events.

The country’s triumphs were split evenly between the men's and women's competitions.

Among the Russian men's winners at the Bulgarian capital’s Asics Arena were Vladimir Gritsenko in the under-54 kilograms category, Sergei Kirsanov in the under-58kg and Andrei Kanaev in the under-63kg.

There was also success for Emil Aliev in the under-74kg, Konstantin Bocherov in the under-80kg and Pavel Tsygankov in the under-87kg.

The two other men’s gold medals went to Turkey thanks to victories for Mehmet Kani Polat in the under-68kg and Sergen Curabaz in the over-87kg.

On the women’s side, Russia triumphed through Anastasiia Artamonova in the under-46kg, Alena Mironyuk in the under-53kg, Alexandra Shabalina in the under-57kg, Liliia Khuzina in the under-62kg, Margarita Blizniakova in the under-67kg and Kristina Adebaio in the over-73kg.

Spain came out on top in the two other female categories with Adriana Cerezo Iglesias winning the under-49kg title and Carlota Zanoni Piaget claiming the under-73kg crown.
