Lima 2019 mascot Milco was on hand in the La Victoria district of the Peruvian capital at an event held to promote this year's Pan American and Parapan American Games.

La Victoria will not hold any events but organisers want to spread excitement for the Games across the city.

Milco attended the Activate Victoria event in Krumdieck Park with Peruvian boxer Luis Miranda and the La Victoria Mayor George Forsyth also attending.

"We are going, through all our communication, to encourage the Pan American and Parapan American Games because that will motivate the boys and girls to play sports," said Forsyth.

"What is missing in Peru is infrastructure, so that kids can play sports and it is going to be very good that all districts can use it.

"Sport instills discipline, improves health, that is why I tell children and young people to leave their homes, that they are not locked up, that they enjoy that stage of their life, they have to activate and play sports."

This year's Pan American Games will run between July 26 and August 11.

They will be followed by the Parapan American Games between August 23 and September 1.
