Mexico's Rebeca Valenzuela Álvarez, who set an Americas record in the women's shot put F12 at last month's World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Dubai, has been named as one of the four nominees for the Americas Paralympic Committee (APC) Athlete of the Month for February.

Valenzuela Álvarez achieved a mark of 13.15 metres in the United Arab Emirates, breaking her own mark of 13.05m she had posted at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

Among those joining her on the nominees list are two Nordic skiers, Canada's Collin Cameron and the United States' Oksana Masters.

Competing in front of a home crowd in Prince George, Cameron secured his first World Championships title in the men's cross-country sprint sitting and took the silver medal in mixed relay and biathlon middle distance.

Masters, meanwhile, won five gold and six medals overall at the World Championships.

It was her first major competition since having two surgeries on her elbow.

Completing the nominees list is Brazil's Debora Menezes, who captured her country's first Para-taekwondo world title with a clinical 7-3 win over Uzbekistan’s Guljonoy Naimova in Antalya in Turkey.

The public are invited to vote for their winner of the award, via the APC homepage, until March 18.

Nominations are compiled from submissions by National Paralympic Committees from across the Americas.

Two Colombian wheelchair tennis players were jointly named as the APC Athlete of the Month for January.

Johanna Sossa and Johana Martinez received 53 per cent of the vote after leading their country into the International Tennis Federation World Team Cup Finals, due to take place in Israel between May 13 and 18.

They beat Mexico 3-0 and 2-1 in two ties at the Americas Qualification tournament in the US, sealing Colombia's place at the premier wheelchair tennis team event.
