Birhanu Legese and Ruti Aga ensured an Ethiopian double at today's Tokyo Marathon.

Quick races by the Japanese capital's standards took place with Legese's 2 hours 4min 48sec the second-fastest time ever to win the men's event.

Aga's 2:20:40 was the third fastest time in the women's race at the World Marathon Major.

Wet conditions in the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic host city prevented even quicker times from being set.

Both winners triumphed for the first time over the marathon distance.

"It is a good course," said Legese, who pulled away from Kenya's second-place runner Bedan Karoki at around 21 miles.

"Had the weather been better, I could have run 2:03."

Karoki finished exactly two minutes behind in 2:06:48 as his fellow Kenyan Dickson Chumba came third in 2:08:44.

Reigning champion Chumba was aiming to become the first three-time winner in Tokyo but he began to drift back after 18 miles.

Kensuke Horio led Japan's home contingent with a fifth-place finish in 2:10:21 as their national champion Suguru Osako dropped out having been reduced to a walk.

In the women's race Aga also pulled away from the lead pack at around the 21-mile point.

"The conditions were poor and there was a lot of water on the roads," said Aga, who was the fastest woman on the start-list.

"But it was still a good race."

Ethiopia claimed a 1-2-3 as Helen Tola finished second in 2:21:01.

Shure Demise was the bronze medallist in 2:21:05.

Multiple Majors winner Florence Kiplagat of Kenya was fourth in 2:21:50 as Mao Ichiyama led the Japanese home in seventh, clocking 2:24:33.

Switzerland won both wheelchair races as Paralympic champion Marcel Hug clinched the men's prize in 1:30:44.

Manuela Schär won the women's title in 1:46:57.
