Russia’s Inna Deriglazova beat Italy’s Alice Volpi in a heavyweight clash to seal victory at the International Fencing Federation (FIE) Women’s Foil World Cup in Cairo.

Top seed Deriglazova, the reigning Olympic champion, claimed a 15-7 win over second seed Volpi, the 2018 world gold medallist, in the final at the Cairo Stadium's Indoor Halls Complex.

She had earlier defeated Japan’s Sumire Tsuji 15-10 in the semi-finals.

Volpi overcame the United States’ Lee Kiefer 15-13 in the other last-four encounter.

Kiefer and Tsuji shared the third step of the podium.

The individual event at the FIE Men’s Foil World Cup also concluded today with Rio 2016 Olympic gold medallist Daniele Garozzo coming out on top.

The Italian beat France’s Erwann Le Pechoux 15-13 in the final.

It followed a 15-10 semi-final victory over compatriot Giorgio Avola.

Avola was one of the two bronze medallists along with the US’s Alexander Massialas, who lost 15-10 to Le Pechoux in the penultimate round.

Top seed Race Imboden of the US was beaten in the last-16 by Le Pechoux. 

World champion Alessio Foconi, the second seed, fell to defeat against fellow Italian Avola at the quarter-final stage

The men’s and women’s team events are due to take place tomorrow.
