The President of the International University Sports Federation Oleg Matysin gave a speech at the event, in which he reportedly told the volunteers they can help make visitors feel at home.

"You create the atmosphere of friendliness, help our guests feel comfortable," he said.

"I am sure I am looking at the team that is proud of the contribution they make to the significant project of the national level."

The volunteers, of which around 5,000 are expected to work at the Games in the Russian city, come from all over Russia and the world.

Anas Munzer, who is originally from Syria but now studies at the Moscow Medical University, said he chose to get involved after volunteering at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Moscow.

"I got a unique chance to see Siberia," he said.

"It is not as cold here as I was told, and people are very kind.

"I like the residential complex where we are staying, everything is new and comfortable.

"The competitions will start soon.

"They will be interesting I am sure."

The recruitment process for volunteers lasted more than a year, with the deputy director general of the Krasnoyarsk 2019 directorate, Konstantin Gureev, saying they will be able to take part in "many events" on the cultural programme.

The Universiade will run from March 2 to 12 and feature 11 different sports including Alpine skiing, ice hockey, short track speed skating and bandy.
