Men's top seed El Shorbagy recovered from dropping the opening game against Mexico’s Cesar Salazar to claim a 10-12, 11-4, 11-8, 11-8 at Union Station.

The Egyptian is now set to next face Hong Kong’s Leo Au as he continues his pursuit of a second consecutive world title.

"He has beaten me once before, so he’s obviously someone who knows how to beat me and I knew it was going to be tough from the first point," said El Shorbagy.

"Anything can happen and I knew with Cesar today that since he beat me before, my turn could have been today. 

"I felt sharper than yesterday and sometimes when you get harder matches at the start of the tournament, it can make you sharper."

Elsewhere in the men's draw, second seed Ali Farag of Egypt joined his compatriot in the third round by defeating team-mate and world junior champion Mostafa Asal 11-1, 11-4, 11-2.

Farag is now scheduled to play another Egyptian, Mazen Hesham, in round three.

World number 33 Youssef Soliman was unable to build on his shock win over 2016 winner and compatriot Karim Abdel Gawad yesterday as he was beaten 11-6, 7-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-7 by Joel Makin of Wales.

El Welily also maintained her bid for a second straight title as she breezed into the third round of the women's draw.

The Egyptian star comfortably dispatched team-mate Hania El Hammamy 11-5, 11-7, 11-9 to set up a meeting with Alison Waters of England.

Eight-time world champion Nicol David of Malaysia, seeded 13th for this year's tournament, is also through after she beat England's Millie Tomlinson 11-5, 11-4, 11-7.

David will go up against Camille Serme for a place in the quarter-finals after the French player recorded a dominant 11-2, 11-5, 11-7 victory over Lisa Aitken of Scotland.

United States number one Amanda Sobhy overcame fellow American Olivia Blatchford Clyne 6-11, 11-7, 11-1, 11-6 to progress.
