The event, taking place at the athletics stadium of the Dubai Club for People of Determination, is the first of nine events in the 2019 World Para Athletics Grand Prix season. 

Australia's Vanessa Low returned to international action with a world record in the women's long jump F61.

She had taken two years out to recover from a back injury she obtained in the run-up to the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. 

Low leapt 5.05 metres on her second jump of the day, becoming the first in her class to jump over five metres.

"I'm returning to international action after a long time and it feels great," she said.

"I have worked a lot on my consistency. 

"Reaching the five-metre mark was like impossible a decade back, but I am happy to get it right at the start of the season."

Two world records were set in the javelin events, with New Zealand's Holly Robinson throwing 43.64m in the F46 class on her first attempt of the day.

This was 62cm further than the previous record, set by Britain's Holly Arnold at the London 2017 World Championships.

Kazakhstan's Irina Tychshenko then threw a record of 21.65m in the F45 class.

Double Paralympic champion Walid Ktila of Tunisia set a new world record in the men's 100m T34 race in a time of 14.62sec.

He knocked 0.18 seconds off the record previously set by rival Rheed McCracken of Australia.

McCracken finished second in today's race.

"It feels great to get a gold with just two weeks of training," said Ktila.

"I haven’t been training regularly because of a shoulder niggle since last March. 

"It is big confidence booster for me going ahead in the season."

The action in Dubai continues tomorrow.
