In a statement, world football's governing body confirmed Peru would not stage the men's tournament "in view of a number of organisational and infrastructure challenges linked to the event delivery".

The event was due to be held in the South American country, which is also hosting the Pan American and Parapan American Games later this year, in October.

FIFA said it was "currently evaluating different alternatives" for the tournament but did not reveal potential replacements for Peru.

The decision was made by the Bureau of the FIFA Council, comprised of President Gianni Infantino and the heads of each of the six confederations, following several inspection visits to Peru.

"FIFA would like to express its thanks to the FPF and the Peruvian authorities for their efforts, and remains open to organising a competition in Peru in the future," the statement added.

The previous edition of the biennial FIFA Under-17 World Cup was held in India in 2017, where England beat Spain in the final.

The competition was first held as an under-16 tournament from 1985 to 1989 before it was rebranded as the FIFA Under-17 World Championship from 1991.

It then became the Under-17 World Cup in 2007.

Nigeria are the most successful nation in the event's history, winning the title five times, including three victories since it was changed from the World Championship to the World Cup.
