Denmark defended their title with ease today on home soil at the European Mixed Team Badminton Championships in Copenhagen.

Having advanced from the group stage unbeaten and then seen off The Netherlands 3-0 in yesterday’s semi-finals, Denmark beat Germany by the same score line today to seal the gold medal at the Frederiksberg Hallerne.

Line Kjaesfeldt sealed the title with a 21-16, 21-17 victory in the women’s singles over Yvonne Li and afterwards said she was "really happy".

"We were favourites to win but we did a really good job this week and feeling really confident, so I am really proud of the team," she said.

"We knew that it would be a really tough match, but I think we also knew that if all of us were playing our best we had a chance to win 3-0 and I think we played really good today."

With the mixed doubles going ahead first in the best of five tie, Mathias Christiansen and Christiana Pedersen beat Isabel Herttrich and Mark Lamsfuss 21-12, 21-12 to put the Danes 1-0 up.

It became 2-0 when Anders Antonsen beat Max Weisskirchen 21-9, 21-13 in the men’s singles, with Kjaersfeldt then coming out and winning again to end the tie.

Their early triumphs in the first three matches - which all lasted less than 40 minutes - meant neither the men’s nor women’s doubles matches had to go ahead.

Speaking afterwards Germany’s Li said she simply, "couldn’t cope" with Kjaersfeldt’s performance, though added it had been a "great week" for her team.

"We were nearly out after our 5-0 [loss] against Russia and then we knew we had to put everything on the line against England [in the group stage]," she said.

"It was a great week for us, but also a tough, long week."
