A campaign has been launched by the Jamaica Olympic Association (JOA) which aims to see the country represented in 10 sports at Tokyo 2020. 

The campaign is titled "10 in 20" and has the aim of encouraging greater diversity in the disciplines Jamaica participates in at the Games.

Jamaica has established a reputation as a one of the prominent powers in athletics, with the country having secured numerous medals in sprint events at recent Olympic Games.

The country were represented in four sports at Rio 2016 in athletics, diving, gymnastics and swimming.

Their most diverse team came at 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, where Jamaica were represented in six sports.

JOA chief executive Ryan Foster has claimed it is important for the country to compete in a wider range of sports.

"The JOA is keen on showing that we have a diversely talented people, and through coaching and infrastructure, we can create more opportunities for our athletes to earn outside of the Games," Foster told the Jamaican Gleaner.

Foster added: "The Olympics provides the best platform to showcase the sporting talents of Jamaicans, and there are opportunities for them to earn beyond the games across some of the broader disciplines."

The JOA claimed they are working closely with governing bodies in an effort to develop athletes who could potentially qualify for the Games in most sports.

The process reportedly includes provided support to athletes and Federations to help their development.

Support to assist athletes to attend qualification events is also being provided.

Coaching of athletes and training coaching is included in this process, as well as providing equipment.

Central American and Caribbean Games fencing silver medallist Caitlin Chang and Llori Sharpe, who competed in triathlon at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast, are considered among the athletes who could potentially qualify.

A total of 11 athletes are also being supported through the International Olympic Committee’s Olympic Solidarity scholarships, according to the Jamaican Gleaner.
