FIFA has moved its annual flagship awards ceremony from Milan to London as the governing body confirmed this year's event would be held at the Italian city's Teatro alla Scala.

The last two editions of the Best FIFA Football Awards have taken place in London but the organisation has decided to stage the 2019 ceremony at the world-famous opera house on September 23.

The spectacle had previously been held in Zurich before it was switched to the English capital by the new FIFA leadership in 2017.

"FIFA is extremely grateful to the Teatro alla Scala and the Milanese authorities for the unique opportunity to host the Best FIFA Football Awards at such a special venue and in a city steeped in football tradition, where passion for the beautiful game is ingrained in daily life," FIFA said in a statement confirming the move.

"This will no doubt provide the perfect platform for what will be a truly unforgettable event, with the biggest stars in world football being honoured for their performances in the current season."

FIFA claimed the 2019 Best FIFA Football Awards would take on added significance as the Women's World Cup is due to be held in France in June and July.

Croatian midfielder Luka Modrić and legendary Brazilian Marta scooped the men's and women's prizes at the 2018 awards.

Modrić took home the award having first helped Real Madrid clinch their third consecutive UEFA Champions League title before captaining Croatia to their first World Cup final, where they were beaten 4-2 by France.

Marta secured the women’s prize for the sixth time in her career after she led Brazil to the Copa America Femenina crown.
