The United States won gold in the men's relay 4x5km cross country event at the FIS Nordic Junior World Championships ©US Ski Team

The United States won their first gold medal of the International Ski Federation (FIS) Nordic Junior World Championships after triumphing in the men's relay 4x5 kilometres cross-country event.

The United States were yet to win a medal at the competition in the Finnish town of Lahti but triumphed today in the men's team cros- country relay event.

Luke Jager, Ben Ogden, Johnny Hagenbuch and Gus Schumacher recorded a time of 45min 34.7sec to secure victory, beating the Russian team of Egor Trefilov, Andrey Kuznetsov, Yaroslav Egoshin and Alexander Terentev, who were 3.8 seconds behind. 

The German quartet of Milz Jakob, Florian Knopf, Anian Sossau and Friedrich Moch finished third in 45:41.0.

Norway won the women's relay 4x3.3km cross country, with Kristin Austgulen Fosnaes, Astrid Stav, Helene Marie Fossesholm and Kristine Stavaas Skistad finishing in a time of 35:24.7.

Russia achieved another silver when Anastasiya Faleeva, Kristina Kuskova, Veronika Stepanova and Anna Grukhvina came second in 35:25.7.

Sweden's Louise Lindstroem, Frida Karlsson, Tilde Baangman and Linn Svahn were in third place with 35:58.0.

After accumulating two silver medals, Russia got gold in the women's team ski jumping event after Mariia Iakovleva, Aleksandra Barantceva, Anna Shpyneva and Lidiia Iakovleva scored 912.2.

Germany's Jenny Nowak, Josephin Laue, Selina Freitag and Agnes Reisch took silver with a score of 845.4, while Austria's Marita Kramer, Lisa Hirner, Claudia Purker and Lisa Eder were given bronze for a score of 831.6. 

Germany achieved gold in the men's team ski jumping event, with the quartet of Luca Roth, Kilian Maerkl, Philipp Raimund and Constantin Schmid scoring 979.7 points.

Norway's Fredrik Villumstad, Anders Ladehaug, Sander Vossan Eriksen and Thomas Aasen Markeng finished second with 976.8, while Aljaž Osterc, Jan Bombek, Jernej Presecnik and Žak  Mogel of Slovenia came third with 952.6 points.

Competition is due tocontinue tomorrow in Lahti with the mixed team ski jumping and the men's 10km nordic combined event.
