Basildon Sporting_VillageOctober 12 - Work is due to start today on the £38 million Basildon Sports Village that it is hoped will host a major overseas team before the London 2012 Olympics.

The project is due to be completed in April 2011.

Kevin Blake, the Basildon Council Cabinet member for the Leisure and Arts Services, said: "I am delighted work is about to start on this fantastic facility for all the people of Basildon.

"This 18-month construction programme is being carefully managed to ensure the facility is delivered both on time and on budget.

The facilities will include a 50-metre Olympic swimming pool – the first of its kind in Essex – a gymnastics centre, sports hall, fitness centre and a multi-purpose studio.
