Former Fiji sports star and Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) member Dr Jiko Luveni has received numerous tributes after passing away earlier this month.

Luveni, who died on December 22, was most well known for her career in politics, becoming the Fiji's first female Speaker of Parliament in 2014 and retaining that position until her death.

She also represented Fiji in three Pacific Games at both table tennis and golf and was a member of the Fiji Sports Council and FASANOC's Tripartite Appeals Committee.

Her other achievements include becoming the first woman to graduate in dentistry from the Fiji School of Medicine in the 1960s.

FASANOC's chief executive Lorraine Mar paid tribute to Luveni among many others.

"We are really sad to hear the passing away of Dr Luveni," she said.

"On behalf of FASANOC I send our condolences to her family."

It is believed Luveni passed away after a short illness.
