Sweden are in the lead after the first day of the trios qualifying event at the Men's World Tenpin Bowling Championships in Hong Kong.

The Swedish trio of Jesper Svensson, Martin Larsen and Mattias Wetterber got off to a good start at the South China Athletic Association Bowling Centre, scoring 702 points in their opening game.

They then got 647 and 680 in their respective second and third games to top the second squad with 2,029 points in total.

This was enough to push the Indonesian trio of Ryan Lalisang, Billy Muhammad Islam and Hardy Rachmadian, who scored 2,001 points in the first squad, into second place overall.

In third place so far is The Netherlands, consisting of Johnny Spil, Jord van Weeren and Xander van Mazijk.

America's EJ Tackett, Andrew Anderson and Kyle Troup finished their three games in the first squad with 1,984 points.

None of the competitors in the third squad scored highly enough to make it into the top four, with South Korea's Jongwoo Park, Seonghoi Koo and Kyungmin Kim getting 1,971 to make it to fifth place overall.

Tomorrow is due to see the trios playing another three games on the final day of the qualifying event, with the top four teams progressing into the semi-finals.
