Japan's Tatsuya Shinhama won the men's 500 metres the day after securing his maiden victory in the same event at the International Skating Union (ISU) Speed Skating World Cup in Tomakomai.

The 22-year-old finished in 35.20sec to claim his second gold medal of the competition in front of a home crowd at Tomakomai Highland Sports Center.

He beat Russia's Viktor Mushtakov, who clocked 35.45, and compatriot Yuma Murakami to take the win.

Japan also had success in the women's 500m as Nao Kodaira continued her dominant start to the season by clinching gold in a a time of 38.26.

Vanesse Herzog of Austria came in second in 38.57, with America's Brittany Bowe was third.

Bowe also got bronze medal in the 1,500m after finishing in a time of 1min 59.83sec, finishing behind Japan's Migo Takagi in second and Ireen Wüst of The Netherlands, who claimed victory in 1:58.74.

That triumph gave Wüst her 22nd 1,500m World Cup win of her career.

The Netherlands completely dominated the podium in the men's 1,500m, with Kjeld Nuis, Patrick Roest and Thomas Krol finishing first, second and third with times of 1:47.61, 1:48.20 and 1:48.39 respectively. 

In the mass start event, Vitaly Mikhailov of Belarus sealed his first ISU World Cup gold medal as he won the men's competition.

He recorded a time of 8:06.54 to do so, with South Korea's Cheonho Um in second having stopped the clock in 8:15.94 and Belgium's Bart Swings did enough for third.

South Korea's Bo-Reum Kim won the women's mass start in 8:52.25, followed by Francesca Lollobrigida of Italy in 8:52.25 and Canada's Ivanie Blondin in third.

The action is due to continue tomorrow on the final day of the competition, when the team sprint events take place, as well as the 1,000m, 3,000m and 5,000m races.
