Spain booked their place in the last eight after a 5-0 win over Canada at the Estadio Charrua in Montevideo saw them top Group D.

Salma Paralluelo opened the scoring for Spain after just nine minutes, while Irene Lopez scored twice.

As group winners, Spain will play the second placed team in Group C, North Korea, in the quarter-finals on Saturday (November 24) at the Estadio Alberto Suppici in Colonia Del Sacramento.

Despite their 5-0 thrashing, Canada qualified second in Group D and will play Germany in the next round.

Germany topped their group thanks to a 4-0 win over the United States in Montevideo.

The US had 26 goal attempts but couldn’t convert any of them as they fell prey to three counter-attacks from the Germans.

Reigning champions North Korea had to come from behind to beat Cameroon 2-1 and continue the defence of their title.

Alice Kameni scored after just six minutes of the match to put Cameroon ahead as North Korea desperately tried to equalise.

A goal was judged offside before Ri Su-Gyong hit the post from a penalty.

Ko Kyong-Hui managed to draw level with Cameroon just before half-time as Ri Su-Jong added the final goal to ensure North Korea progressed to the knock-out stages.

Elsewhere at the Estadio Alberto Suppici, former champions South Korea drew 1-1 with Colombia in a dead-rubber contest as both sides had already been eliminated.

The last eight will see Germany, North Korea, Canada, Spain, Ghana, New Zealand, Japan and Mexico bid for semi-final places.
