Japan and Mexico's Group B tie ended as a 1-1 draw which was enough for both teams to progress to the quarter-finals of the FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup in Uruguay.

Momoka Kinoshita scored first for Japan at the Estadio Domingo Burgueno Miguel in Maldonado.

With Brazil comfortably winning the other Group B game against South Africa 4-1, Mexico needed to at least equalise to advance.

Alison Gonzalez did this for Mexico in the second-half, and both teams finished with five points with Japan taking the top spot on goal difference.

Despite Brazil's assertive win, they exited the competition on four points and South Africa finished bottom of Group B with one point.

Ghana and New Zealand met at the Estadio Charrúato in Montevideo to determine who would finish first and second in Group A, with both teams already qualified for the next round.

Ghana proved triumphant, winning 2-0 after two-goals from captain Mukarama Abdulai.

The remaining game ended as a 1-1 draw between Finland and hosts Uruguay. 

New Zealand are now due play Japan in their quarter-final on Saturday (November 24), while Ghana are scheduled to meet Mexico on Sunday (November 25).

Tomorrow is set to see action in Group C, where any of the four teams can still qualify or be eliminated.

Germany meet the United States and defending champions North Korea play Cameroon, with each team on three points in the group table.

In Group D, already qualified Canada play quarter-final hopefuls Spain, while Colombia will try to progress against South Korea, who cannot advanace.
