Semi-finals took place today across 10 weight classes on the penultimate day of action at the European Union Boxing Championships in Vallodolid in Spain, with English boxers making it through to eight.

The vast majority of the contests went the distance and were won on points, but there were two in which the referee stepped in and stopped the contest early.

Technical knockouts (TKOs) were declared in the first semi in the lightweight division and the second semi in the light heavyweight class.

In the lightweight division Sofiane Oumha from France beat Poland’s Radomir Obrusnak in just the second round and will now face England’s Calum French in the gold medal match, who beat Italy’s Francesco Maietta on points 4-0.

Meanwhile in the light heavyweight class Romania’s Andrei Aradoie beat Frenchhman Gaetan Ntambwe by TKO in round three of their bout.

He will now fight another Englishman, Benjamin Whittaker, for the gold, who make it through by default after his semi-final opponent Matus Strnisko from Slovakia withdrew.

One other walkover occurred today, and it came in the first session, in the heavyweight class.

In the second semi-final Croatia’s Toni Filipi was declared the winner without having to fight, as his Romanian opponent Cristian Filip withdrew.

Filipi will now have to beat Italy’s Aziz Abbes Mouhidine if he is to win the gold.

The Italian triumphed in his semi-final on points against England’s Cheavon Clarke, 5-0.

Overall England will be by far the most heavily represented nation in the finals, with eight of their boxers making it through across the 10 categories today, including at bantamweight, middleweight, flyweight and lightweight among others.

At bantamweight Peter McGrail will fight Ireland's Kurt Walker in the final, after the Englishman beat Jordan Rodriguez from France in their semi 3-2.

At flyweight William Cawley will aim to bring the gold home for England after beating Bulgaria's Tinko Banabakov in the last four, 5-0.

Cawley will box Spain's Gabriel Escobar Mascucano for the European title.
