Kateryna Lagno booked her place in the final of the Women's World Chess Championships in Khanty-Mansiysk.

The Russian player was forced to play a tie break match against Ukraine’s former world champion Mariya Muychuk.

It followed two draws in their opening matches of the semi-final at the Concert and Theatre Complex.

Lagno was able to overcome the challenge of the tournament seventh seed to claim the crucial victory to progress.

The third ranked player is now set to meet China’s Ju Wenjun in the final.

Ju, the defending champion, overcame Russia's fifth-ranked Alexandra Kosteniuk yesterday.

The two finalists will enjoy a rest day tomorrow.

The final will begin on Monday (November 19).

The World Chess Championship match in London will resume tomorrow, following a rest day today.

Defending champion Magnus Carlsen and American challenger Fabiano Caruana are level at the halfway mark.

It follows six straight draws, including a remarkable recovery from Norway’s Carlsen yesterday.

The World Chess Federation-organised event is taking place at The College in Holborn.
