Russian favourite Dmitriy Danilenko was knocked out as the International Fencing Federation's Men's Sabre World Cup began in Algiers.

Danilenko was the top-ranked fencer participating in the elimination rounds after the group phase, and as-such received a first-round bye at the Salle Omnisports Harcha Hacene.

However, he was then dumped out in the Algerian capital, losing 15-11 to American Peter Souders in round two.

It means the Russian will not take his place in the last-64 tomorrow, where the top group qualifiers and the world's best-ranked fencers come in.

South Korea's Jeong Hoon So, ranked second for the elimination rounds, was also defeated after an initial bye.

He went down 15-12 to China's Xianfei Huang.

Akran Bounabi, the only Algerian in the draw, lost his first elimination clash to Vaja Retchia of Georgia, 15-11.

The World Cup will be contested to completion tomorrow.

World number one Eli Derschwitz of the United States has confirmed his entry to the competition and will be ranked first.
