The best two men’s sabre fencers are set to compete at the International Fencing Federation (FIE) World Cup event in Algiers.

The two-day competition is scheduled to begin tomorrow and conclude on Saturday (November 17) at the Salle Omnisports Harcha Hacene in the Algerian capital.

World number one Eli Derschwitz of the United States has confirmed his entry to the competition.

The former junior world champion won silver at the 2018 Wuxi World Championships in China earlier this year but will not be able to avenge his loss to Kim Jung-hwan of South Korea, as he is not attending the event.

His world number two team-mate Gu Bongil, however, will be competing  and hoping to challenge Derschwitz for the victory.

The three-time individual Asian Games champion is in fine form after winning his third continental title in Jakarta earlier this year.

Gu is also an Olympic gold medallist, having formed part of the South Korean team which won the London 2012 title.

Hungary’s Áron Szilágyi, the world number four, is the next highest ranked fencer in the competition.
