Elias, seeded eighth for the tournament at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha, claimed an 11-8, 11-3, 13-11, 10-12, 11-7 triumph to reach the last four.

The Peruvian will face German Simon Rösner for a place in the final after the fourth seed overcame seventh seed Paul Coll of New Zealand 8-11, 11-9, 11-4, 12-10 at the World Tour event.

El Shorbagy was both the favourite to progress and to win the tournament but fell to a surprising defeat in a match which lasted for an hour and 16 minutes.

The result ended his pursuit of a fourth Qatar Classic crown and a seventh consecutive appearance in the final.

Elsewhere, second seed Ali Farag booked his place in the tournament's showpiece encounter after he came through his semi-final against Egyptian counterpart Karim Abdel Gawad.

Farag will now take on the mantle of favourite as he beat his compatriot 11-9, 11-7, 11-8.

He will face either third seed Tarek Momen, also of Egypt, or Welsh outsider Joel Makin in the next round.
