The first round of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Paris Masters took place today with a number of participants setting up second round matches against the tournament's top seeds.

With the big names receiving a bye into the second round, their first opponents of the tournament have been determined.

The competition is being played at the AccorHotels Arena in Paris, previously known as the Palais omnisports de Paris-Bercy.

World number two Novak Djokovic of Serbia will play Joao Sousa of Portugal, who progressed through the qualifiers to reach the main stage of the tournament.

Sousa beat Marco Cecchinato of Italy 7-5, 6-3 to set up the tie with Djokovic, who has won the Paris Masters four times.

Croatia's Marin Cilic will play Germany's Philip Kohlschreiber after he beat Robin Haase of The Netherlands 6-7, 6-4, 6-2.

Kevin Anderson of South Africa will come up against Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia, who beat several players ranked higher than him to win the China Open earlier this month.

Basilashvili's opponent John Milman of Australia retired in the second set of their match, allowing the Georgian to progress.

With the remainder of the first round matches to be played tomorrow, the second round opponents for world number one Rafael Nadal of Spain, Roger Federer of Switzerland and Alexander Zverev of Germany are yet to be decided.

The Paris Masters is the last competition to take place before the season ending ATP finals in London, starting on November 12.
