The International Surfing Association (ISA) has revealed 154 women have entered the event in California, beating the previous mark of 104 set in 2016.

It is claimed this marks an "important success in the ISA's push for gender equality in the sport".

The Championships will also be gender equal, with the same amount of men and women due to participate for the first time in its history.

A total of 362 athletes from 44 nations will compete, surpassing the record of 41 nations set at the 2016 edition in the Azores islands of Portugal.

The host nation will aim for a third team gold medal in four editions of the World Junior Championships.

The United States squad triumphed in 2015, the last time the event was staged in California, and in Japan two years later.

The Championships get underway with the Opening Ceremony before competition begins tomorrow.

Athletes and delegations have already arrived in California in preparation for the event, scheduled to conclude on November 4.
