Mexico produced a clinical display as they ended Venezuela's unbeaten run at the World Baseball Softball Confederation Under-23 Baseball World Cup in Colombia.

The Mexican team claimed an impressive 10-4 victory in the super round at the Edgar Renteria Baseball Stadium in Barranquilla.

The result strengthened Mexico's chances of reaching the final stage as they now have a two win and one loss record in the super round.

It was the first defeat Venezuela had suffered at the tournament in the Colombian city.

Roberto Valenzuela was the star of the show for Mexico as he hit a grand slam in the sixth inning.

"The grand slam is important because it helped the team win," he said.

"You win as a team and you lose as a team, not as an individual.”

Elsewhere in the super round, Japan maintained their unbeaten start to the event with a narrow 3-2 win over South Korea.

The Japanese side remain in top spot on the standings and are the only team who have yet to suffer defeat in Barranquilla.

Chinese Taipei, who squeezed through to the super round with victory against Colombia on the final day of the opening phase yesterday, also began with a win as they edged Dominican Republic 3-1.

The tournament continues tomorrow.
