International Luge Federation add duo to Medical Commission

The International Luge Federation (FIL) has made two appointments to its Medical Commission.

Dr. Lutz Kistenmacher from Germany and Dr. Ruslan Simashvili of Russia will both take their seats on the body.

It takes the number of members up to six.

Dr. Eugene Byrne of the United States, Germany's Dr. Jörg Ellermeyer, Latvia's Dr. Zane Kruse and Italy's Dr. Alex Mitterhofer all also have roles.

The FIL also confirmed a change in role for Byrne.

He will now be responsible for all functions relating to doping on the Medical Commission.

The appointments come with the FIL preparing for the new World Cup season.

Austrian city Innsbruck will host the first event of the flagship circuit between November 24 and 25.

The 2019 World Championships will be held in Winterberg in Germany from January 25.

When British skaters Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean won the Olympic gold medal in ice dance at Sarajevo 1984 with 12 perfect 6.0s from every judge, for their interpretation of Maurice Ravel's Boléro, an important member of their team was singer-actor Michael Crawford. Crawford, who had played Frank Spencer in British sitcom Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em and the title role in the musical The Phantom of the Opera, had become a mentor to the pair in 1981 and went on to help them create their Olympic routine. Crawford said he “taught them how to act". He was present with their trainer Betty Callaway at the ringside at Sarajevo as they created one of the most iconic moments in Olympic history.
