Following four days of individual competition at the Atlantis Paradise Island Bahamas' Imperial Ballroom, a mixed team event will bring down the curtain on the event on Sunday (October 21). 

"One of the most fascinating and important events in our sport, the Junior World Championships, will take place for the first time in The Bahamas this year," IJF President Marius Vizer said.

"The most talented young judoka in the world will travel to Nassau, Bahamas, for a five-day competition which is the biggest judo event ever to be staged in the Caribbean. 

"For some athletes, this may be their first time abroad and with this new and exciting experience comes an element of the unknown and some pressure. 

"The IJF is here to help the competitors to be as comfortable and prepared as possible."

Vizer added: "This is an important step for judo in this region and one which we hope everyone can enjoy, take advantage of and lead to more development of our sport in The Bahamas and beyond. 

"I wish you all a memorable time in The Bahamas and encourage you all to support the judoka, coaches, officials and teams who may not necessarily have experience of an IJF setting."

Bahamas Judo Federation President D’Arcy Rahming said it is an honour to host such a high-level event and extend the country's hospitality and friendship to the 79 nations that will attend.

"I thank the International Judo Federation for the trust to host this event and this will be a Championship to remember," he said. 

"I wish all the participants of this event a great experience.

"May you meet your goals and may you enjoy a few days of relaxation and cultural exchange on the beautiful beaches of The Bahamas."

A total of 492 athletes - 281 men and 211 women - are due to compete in Nassau.

All five continents will be represented.

The mixed team competition will make its Olympic bow at Tokyo 2020.
