Unseeded Spaniard Ana Perez Box was the shock winner of the women's under-52 kilograms gold medal as action begun today at the International Judo Federation (IJF) Grand Prix in Cancún.

The 22-year-old triumphed in her first IJF final appearance at the expense of four-time Grand Prix medallist Agata Perenc of Poland.

A waza-ari score proved to be enough for the Hohhot Grand Prix bronze medallist at the Mexican city's Polifórum Benito Juárez.

Portugal's Joana Ramos beat Poland's Karolina Pienkowska in the first bronze medal match, while Switzerland's Evelyne Tschopp defeated compatriot Fabienne Kocher in the second.

Among today's other winners on the women's side was Olympic champion Rafaela Silva, who avenged her opening World Championships contest defeat at the hands of Canada's Jessica Klimkait by beating her rival for gold in the under-57kg final.

Silva, who won the Budapest Grand Prix in August, won her fifth Grand Prix crown with an emphatic showing as she scored two times without reply.

The Brazilian will now break back into the world's top 10, while Klimkait secured invaluable Tokyo 2020 qualification points as her domestic battle with Christa Deguchi intensifies.

Panama's Miryam Roper and Israel's Timna Nelson Levy were the under-57kg bronze medallists with Romania's Corina Stefan and Great Britain's Nekoda Smythe-Davis just missing out on a podium place.

In the women's under-48kg category, another reigning Olympic champion, Paula Pareto of Argentina, produced a vintage display to claim a third Grand Prix title.

The former world champion, who had only just arrived from Buenos Aires where she was an athlete role model at her home Youth Olympic Games, comprehensively beat Antalya Grand Prix gold medallist Catarina Costa of Portugal by two unanswered scores.

Spain's Julia Figueroa shared the third step of the podium with Serbia's Milica Nikolic thanks to their bronze medal match wins over Germany's Katharina Menz and Brazil's Sarah Menezes.

One of today's two male winners was The Netherlands' Tornike Tsjakadoea after he defeated France's Luka Mkheidze to claim the under-60kg title.

Both judoka were contesting their first IJF World Judo Tour final and were guaranteed their first medals at this level.

Mkheidze, the Minsk European Open silver medallist, took the lead with a waza-ari score after 89 seconds but Tsjakadoea, the former Junior European Championships gold medallist, fought back and scored ippon with 19 seconds left on the clock with his koshi-waza.

Czech Republic's David Pulkrabek beat number one seed Francisco Garrigos of Spain in the first bronze medal match, while Ecuador's Lenin Preciado defeated Russia's Islam Yashuev in the second.

In the men's under-66kg division, Russia's Aram Grigoryan controlled fellow countryman Mikhail Puliaev with a professional display to win the gold medal.

Grigoryan, the Tunis Grand Prix bronze medallist, struck IJF gold for the first time as three-time world silver medallist Puliaev toiled and was far below his best.

Puliaev, who finished seventh at the World Championships last month, was held down with surprising ease by his younger colleague.

There was mixed fortunes for Brazil in the bronze medal matches with Charles Chibana beating Slovakia's Matej Poliak in the first and Daniel Cargnin losing to Italy's Elios Manzi in the second.

Competition in Cancún is due to continue tomorrow.
