Czech Kateřina Siniaková caused an upset as she beat defending champion Caroline Garcia at the Wuhan Open in China today.

The Czech player beat Garcia in a thrilling three sets 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 contest at the Optics Valley International Tennis Center.

Her reward is a meeting with Spain's two-time Grand Slam champion Garbiñe Muguruza.

This was followed by further upset at the Premier Five tournament on the Women's Tennis Association Tour, when world number one Simona Halep of Romania was dispatched by Dominika Cibulková of Slovakia 6-0, 7-5.

Halep appeared to be struggling with an injury and the Slovakian player, a former world number four, took full advantage.

"Today I was playing really well," Cibulková, the 2016 runner-up said.

"It wasn't easy with her medical timeouts, tough mentally.

"I'm glad I made it through in the end."

Barbora Strýcová of Czech Republic was defeated by Australian Daria Gavrilova 6-2, 7-6, while Muguruza was victorious against Swiss Viktorija Golubic 6-0, 6-1.

Russians Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Daria Kasatkina also won their respective matches to progress into the round of sixteen.

The next round will be played tomorrow, and features German Angelique Kerber coming up against Australian Ashleigh Barty.
