Juan Martin del Potro will battle Serbia's Novak Djokovic for the US Open men's singles title as the Argentine reached his first Grand Slam final for nine years.

Del Potro won the US Open back in 2009 but it remains his only Grand Slam triumph with a series of wrist injuries having heavily impacted upon his career.

He has steadily improved his ranking in recent years and the world number three was able to end his wait for another Grand Slam final by overcoming Spain's Rafael Nadal.

Both players traded breaks of serve in the first set, before Del Porto was able to clinch the opener on a tie break at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.

Del Porto took complete control of the match in the second set, with Nadal ailing due to a knee injury which twice saw him receive treatment.

Following Del Porto taking the set 6-2, Nadal was forced to withdraw from the match through injury.

Djokovic was in fine form in his semi-final match, as the Serbian star saw off the challenge of Japan’s Kei Nishikori.

The Wimbledon champion secured a straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 victory.

Djokovic will hope to secure his 14th Grand Slam title when he meets Del Porto in the final on Sunday (September 9).
