Indonesian President Joko Widodo made a perfectly timed surprise appearance at the Asian Games taekwondo tournament,  joining South Korean Prime Minister Nakyeon Lee and World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue.

The officials all watched the action at the JCC Plenary Hall in Indonesia's capital Jakarta, which co-hosted the Games with Palembang.

Amidst the excitement, Rosmaniar Defia, from Indonesia, earned the first taekwondo medal, and the first gold of the Games, for the host nation.

She triumphed in the women's individual poomsae competition.

President Widodo then presented the medal to Defia at the awarding ceremony.

During the President’s visit to the venue, he spoke with Prime Minister Lee and President Choue about the "beauty" of taekwondo.

This year’s Asian Games is the first in which poomsae - involving set sequences of movements - has been contested as a medal event.
