Italy booked their place in the final of the World Women's Youth Water Polo Championships with a narrow victory over Australia in Belgrade.

Italy, who have been in fine form throughout the tournament, will take on Spain for the gold medal tomorrow.

The Italian side ran out 7-5 winners in a hard-fought semi-final contest against the Australians at the Milan Gale Muskatirovic Sports Centre.

Italy set the tone early on as they raced into a two-goal lead, only to be briefly pegged back by the Australian team.

The European nation were able to control proceedings after that as they went 5-3 ahead, a deficit which Australia could not recover from.

Italy maintained their advantage through to the end of the match to secure a place in the competition's showpiece encounter.

In the day's second semi-final, Spain ousted Greece - who conquered defending champions Russia in the last four - to join Italy in the gold medal match.
