Moldova's Dan Olaru stunned defending champion Jean-Charles Valladont of France to reach the men's recurve final at the European Archery Championships in Poland.

Olaru produced a fine display to knock out the Rio 2016 silver medallist as he claimed a 6-4 victory in Legnica.

The 21-year-old upcoming Romanian star will take on Dutch archer Steve Wijler, who enjoyed a breakthrough year in 2017, for the European title on Saturday (September 1).

Wijler was also on the right side of a 6-4 scoreline after he got past Heorhiy Ivanystkyy of Ukraine.

Ivanystkyy and Valladont will have the chance to end on a high when they clash for the bronze medal.

The women's recurve semi-finals were much more straightforward affairs as Turkey's 19-year-old archer Yasemin Anagoz set up a meeting with 2013 world champion Maja Jager of Denmark.

Both athletes recorded convincing 6-0 wins as Anagoz proved too strong for team-mate Gulnaz Coskun, while Jager dispatched Frenchwoman Melanie Gaubil.

Anton Bulaev of Russia beat Pierre-Julien Deloche of France 145-144 to secure his spot in the final of the men's compound event.

Bulaev will go up against Italian Sergio Pagni, who beat compatriot Federico Pagnoni 146-145 in his last four encounter

Deloche, conqueror of Dutch star Mike Schloesser in the quarter-finals, will meet Pagnoni for bronze.

In the women's compound event, Olympic bronze medallist Sophie Dodemont was beaten 147-146 by Turkey's Yesim Bostan as the misery continued for the French team.

Bostan will take on Spain's Andrea Marcos, a 145-143 winner over Denmark's Tanja Jensen, for the European crown.

The competition resumes on Saturday following a rest day tomorrow.
