Around 300 athletes are set to compete at the African Karate Championships in Rwanda’s capital city Kigali over the next three days.

The 17th edition of the Championships will begin tomorrow, with continental titles up for grabs.

There will also be the additional incentive of earning Olympic qualifying points, with competitors looking to appear at Tokyo 2020, when karate makes its debut at the Games.

Egypt look set for success as Giana Lotfy and Sarah Sayed, both of whom are World Championships medallists, are among the entrants.

Algeria’s Lamya Matoub and Michael Du Plessis of South Africa are also considered potential gold medallists.

Morocco’s Sanae Agalmame is expected to be among the other names to watch.

Competition is scheduled to begin tomorrow, with action taking place until Sunday (September 2), when a Closing Ceremony will be held.

A total of 22 nations are expected to participate.

The last edition was was held in Yaounde in Cameroon in 2017.

Tunisia topped the medal table with 19 medals, including seven golds.

They were followed by Egypt with eight medals and six golds and Cameroon with 24 medals and four golds.
